Eight Key Ways to Spot a Real Feng Shui "Master"

The term "Master" used to take nearly a lifetime to achieve, being handed down only after rigorous peer review and lengthy academic tutelage. In a world full of overnight, self-proclaimed experts here's a list to help you discern whether or not you’re looking at a real Feng Shui "Master":

  1. Years of intense study combined with practical implementation of feng shui principles. As the saying goes: theory is for academia, what works on the streets is for practitioners.

  2. Great care and concern for the long-term impact and implications of their recommendations and how they affect others' choices and lives.

  3. Their involvement with feng shui does not revolve around selling "knick-knacks" or feng shui chotchkies as "cures" (just to make a buck).

  4. They don't inspire fear or spread culturally irrelevant superstitions. Rather they use their craft to uplift and inspire.

  5. They are educated in all schools of feng shui: Land Form, Western School, Compass School, Intuitive, BTB, along with the underlying Eastern Classics that formed them namely, The Tao to Ching (Taoism) and the I Ching (aka The Book of Changes) along with other Chinese Classics and history.

  6. They empower you to become a thoughtful practitioner in your own space and life because ultimately YOU are responsible for your results through the care with which you implement your feng shui recommendations.

  7. They share their feng shui "secrets" and formulas in language you can understand and in ways you can apply them to your space immediately.

  8. Perhaps most importantly: They adjust their view of their own performance by the results they get for their clients, and advertise these accomplishments in a way that matches their colleagues assessment of them.

To be frank, some "Feng Shui Masters" out there are far from it. So be wary when you hear someone claiming to be one. I have received master-level training from the creme de la creme in the feng shui community. I have learned each of the different schools and been privy to ancient feng shui "secrets" and some of the most guarded techniques still practiced today in cities such as Hong Kong, New York, and London. And while I have layered this knowledge with extensive field work consulting with homeowners, business owners, designers, architects and builders, I am still wary of calling myself a feng shui “Master.” Why? Because I am still learning.

Every day and with each new client I go a little deeper, learn new applications and ways to fine-tune recommendations. I see my clients get better and more consistent results over time and have a thriving consulting business because they tell others about me. Because of my success I could choose to simply stop learning however I continually seek guidance from those who have gone before me, are better than me at some aspect, know more than me, to study, observe, ask questions, rely on proven sources, and ask for assistance when I'm in over my head.

In short, I plan to "master" the art of being the best practitioner I can be.
